Balding or thinning hair is a cause of distress. It is not unusual for people to look for hair loss reasons. Here is some basic information on hair loss that could be of interest to many of you.

Some Basics About Hair

It would interest you to know that hair grows in cycles. The initial cycle is termed anagen, also called living growing hair. This is followed by catagen, the in-between phase and finally telogen, the resting or falling out phase.

What Is Hair Loss?

The medical definition of hair loss is alopecia. However, alopecia refers to hair loss from the head to the entire body. For most people what is unwelcome is androgenic alopecia. This condition is commonly known as male pattern baldness. In males, hair loss has a definitive pattern beginning above both temples. Gradual thinning of hair occurs, leading to complete baldness. In females, however the pattern differs. Hairline does not recede, but hair becomes thinner all over the head. Total baldness rarely occurs in women.

What Are The Reasons For Hair Loss?

The reasons are so diverse that it is practically impossible to list all the causes of hair loss. Medical researchers have put forth many explanations that include fungal infection, hypothyroidism, iron deficiency, secondary syphilis, chemotherapy, and compulsive hair pulling. The latest medical research in Japan has identified a gene, Sox21 to be the primary cause of baldness in humans.

However, the most commonly identified hair loss reasons are explained here:

Genetic

With aging genetic and hormonal influences result in gradual thinning of hair. This aspect is common to both males and females above the age of 50.

Internal Conditions

Body’s internal conditions play a role in causing thinning of hair. The main causes are deficiency of iron and some hormones.

Childhood Conditions

If hair loss is first observed during childhood, it could be due to hair shaft abnormality. This condition has different facets of hair abnormalities that include, fracture, irregularities like uncombable hair and beaded hair, and coiling and twisting.

Injury To Hair Follicle

Trauma, infection and various skin diseases damage hair follicles in localized areas causing scarring and bald patches.

Scalp Conditions

Many types of scalp conditions cause thinning of hair. Psoriasis, seborrhoeic dermatitis and tinea capitis are the most common scalp diseases that cause either temporary or permanent hair loss.

Trauma

Hair shafts are broken when pulled by tight curlers. Hair dryers and chemicals such as perming solutions or bleach also cause injury to hair shafts.

Inspite of umpteen hair loss reasons, treatment options available are often complex, expensive and not necessarily dependable.
